Skill: 9------------------------------------------------------------------------------THE DETAILSSoundwave is a tall, slim mech. His armor is comprised mostly of angular plates, a dark grayish-blue in color, while the more flexible aspects of him are black with glowing purple aspects. He is notably long-limbed, especially in the arms department. His legs have a curious digitigrade configuration, and his feet are pointed and slim. Clearly, this flier is no plodding soldier; his form brings to mind speed and stealth. Stealth, at least, Soundwave excels at.
Another notable feature is his face, or, rather, lack thereof; instead of common facial features, Soundwave possesses a mask that comes with a screen display. Soundwave can manipulate this to display nearly everything he wants, but it most commonly shows a frequency graph that reacts to whatever sound he makes, and sometimes to ambient noise as well.
Soundwave at present only carries one symbiote with him, and that is Laserbeak. Laserbeak normally resides on Soundwave's chest, seeming, to the untrained eye, to merely be another aspect of Soundwave's angular armor. Laserbeak can be deployed for surveillance, but also can provide a valuable asset in battle through additional firepower. She can also serve as a distraction. The fate of Soundwave's other known symbionts, Ravage, Frenzy, and Rumble, is unknown.
Another unique feature that Soundwave possesses is his tentacles. These deploy from a compartment in his chest. The tentacles are medium-thickness, with glowing purple rings. The ends of the tentacles are blunt and concave. Nestled within this bowl is a handful of wriggling sensory tendrils, which Soundwave uses to hack into computer systems.
Soundwave very rarely speaks, but when he does, his voice is a heavily-synthesized drone, comprised of many tones. It is hypnotic to listen to and almost musical. He can and sometimes will attempt inflection even through the robotic overtones of his voice.------------------------------------------------------------------------------YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO YOU'RE DEALING WITH
Likes:
- His symbionts. He obviously genuinely cares for them, and will place himself between one of his symbionts and danger if he is able.
- Megatron. Soundwave is quietly and utterly loyal to his leader.
- Gathering information and spying on others.
- At times, Starscream. When the Seeker isn't scheming, he can be a capable officer.
- Obedient inferior officers. When everyone acts as they are supposed to, plans move forward quickly and efficiently.
- His alone time.
- Younglings in general, though this is not widely known.
Dislikes:
- Nosy Decepticons. Soundwave is very private. If he wants to share information about himself, then he will. Those that pry into his business rouse Soundwave's silent ire.
- Being treated like a common, creepy stalker. He doesn't mind being occasionally intimidating, but he is Third in Command, and he will be respected.
- At times, Starscream! The Seeker is overly emotional and slave to his own pride. It can be exasperating reigning him in all the time.
- M.E.C.H.
- Being touched in general. Megatron is, of course, exempt from this. Starscream's permission to touch varies with how annoyed Soundwave might be with the Seeker. Soundwave prefers to initiate contact, and will pull away from someone who reaches for him without his permission.
- Seeing resources wasted. The Decepticons need to hold tightly onto every advantage they have. This extends to the drones, as well. He prefers to use them in ways that do not result in their untimely deaths.
- Being told that he has legs like a femme. Seriously. Respect, people.
Personality: Quiet, crafty, and arguably the most loyal of all Decepticons, Soundwave is an enormous asset to Megatron and a huge pain in the aft to anyone who is less than one hundred percent dedicated to the Decepticon cause. He is calm in almost every situation, with a strong inclination to rely on logic and rational thinking to see him through the end of any problem. To others, he seems emotionless. This is not true! Soundwave is just very, very good at masking any emotions he feels.
Soundwave had been instrumental to the rise of the Decepticon cause. He was one of Megatron's first followers, and remains utterly loyal to his leader. Megatron's continued survival and leadership is Soundwave's absolute first priority, and he would die for his leader in a sparkbeat. Despite having numerous opportunities to usurp control of the Decepticons, Soundwave invariably turns them down in favor of preserving Megatron's dominance. He very simply wants to follow. The second most important thing in Soundwave's life is his symbionts. His attachment to them is public knowledge. It is also public knowledge that anyone who hurts his symbionts in an attempt to get to him will meet a violent and painful end.
Soundwave will avoid violence these days, if necessary, and this is not because he is at all squeamish. He simply prefers for things to move along smoothly and mechanically. Fights are unpredictable and messy, and can cause potential problems for the future. When the chips are down, he will usually fight. Soundwave prefers to get battles over with as quickly and as neatly possible. He is quite skilled--he used to be a gladiator, after all--and usually attacks all-out from the very beginning. He is cold, direct, and calculating in the way he fights. He is not especially cruel, but he is also merciless.
Soundwave does not seek out the company of fellow Cybertronians. Some believe this is because he spent most of his life in the company of his symbionts. He didn't need outside companionship. Even now, stranded on an alien planet with only one left to keep him company, he tends to keep to himself. Soundwave prefers to observe and analyze. He will often avoid directly involving himself in the affairs of other Cybertronians unless they are Megatron (out of zealous loyalty) or Starscream (out of necessity, usually).
Soundwave has something of a soft spot for younglings. This is believed to be an ingrained trait, and is probably related to his unique multiple-symbiont-spawning abilities. In a peaceful world untainted by the restriction of caste, he would probably have been a nurturer. In war, this weak spot sometimes proves to be problematic for his comrades. Twice he has been given the opportunity to eliminate the Autobots' human companions, and twice he hasn't gone through with it. He also shows respect for the relationship between other Cybertronians and their symbionts. So far he hasn't been seriously reprimanded for this behavior, because it seems to be one of his only failings as an officer.
Soundwave suppresses his emotions, and for the most part is able to do this without difficulty. Obviously, he has trouble controlling his emotions when his symbionts are involved, either positive (fondness for their antics or for their dutiful servitude), or negative (distress at their harm; anger when they are mistreated). Starscream is one of the few Cybertronians able to push his buttons, and he frequently finds himself annoyed with the other. Megatron, of course, is an exception to the “no emotions” rule, as well. So far none of the officers have managed to work their way either into Soundwave's affections or onto his shit list. He simply doesn't have any friends.
His cool demeanor typically works well against Starscream's pride-driven hotheadedness. The two might not always get along, but they make an undoubtedly good team. Soundwave is often Starscream's voice of reason, or the force that reigns the Seeker in when he's gone too far. He also keeps Starscream's ambitions in check.
Strengths: Personality-wise--Soundwave is intelligent and intensely logical. He is not likely to let emotion sway his judgment in most situations. He is also a very capable officer, able to quickly weigh his decisions and act upon them. He is meticulous and thorough, tireless in his resolve, and fathomless in his loyalty to Megatron. He is very observant and adept at using his knowledge to manipulate situations and individuals to suit his ends.
Physically--He is much, much tougher than he looks. There is a surprising amount of strength in that slim, streamlined body, and Soundwave is extremely skillful in the manner in which he defends himself. He has extensive fighting experience from both before and during the Cybertronian Civil War. He is also able to coordinate his symbionts (currently he only has one) to give him an edge. Underestimating Soundwave because he prefers not to fight is a huge mistake.
Weaknesses: Personality wise--His greatest and most obvious weakness is his devotion to his symbionts. Soundwave will lay his own life down for his symbionts, and he could easily be exploited if they fell into the wrong hands. He is similarly loyal to Megatron, and this loyalty can also be manipulated to force Soundwave to act in ways he normally wouldn't. His detached perspective serves him well as an intelligence officer, but makes it very difficult for him to connect with his comrades. He doesn't really have any social connections, and this leaves him with nobody but himself to rely on.
His biggest vice is his curiosity. If something truly interests him, something he doesn't understand, he will almost obsessivey seek it out.
Physically--He is not the fastest of seekers, only slightly above average as far as speed is concerned. He is not as big and bulky as many Cybertronians, either. His tentacles, while useful, are highly sensitive appendages. After all, they are responsible for subtle manipulation of current, among other delicate functions, and as such they are not very resistant to pain.------------------------------------------------------------------------------THE SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET
Family: Genitors Unknown; Known family are symbionts Laserbeak (currently united with host), Ravage (whereabouts unknown) Rumble (whereabouts unknown) and Frenzy (whereabouts unknown). No other known family members.
History: Soundwave met his Lord on the field of battle. He was the only opponent that was able to fight Megatronus into a standstill. Soon after, he was recruited to the budding Decepticon cause, and he has since served diligently. He worked with Megatron to bring the caste-system crisis to the eyes of the council, only to see his Lord seemingly betrayed by one of their newest companions, young Orion Pax--of whom Soundwave had long since been suspicious.
Soundwave served dutifully during the Cybertronian Civil War, deploying his Minicons and using his information-gathering skills to great effect. Several of his discoveries helped keep the Decepticons in top fighting condition during the war. He fought alongside his Lord during the battle against Omega Supreme, and was later responsible for the demise of Zeta Prime.
When it came time to leave Cybertron, Soundwave followed Megatron without question. He patiently served alongside Starscream during the years in which Megatron campaigned alone, but when his Lord finally returned to Earth, Soundwave was pleased to take his rightful place in Megatron's shadow… until his leader was nearly killed. Soundwave diligently guarded his Lord's mortally-wounded body afterward, resisting Starscream and Knock Out's efforts to convince him that Megatron was doomed.
His loyalty paid off, because it wasn't terribly long before the Decepticon's rightful leader was restored. Soundwave has served ever faithfully, even going to far as to physically assert his dominance over Airachnid when she attempted to seize control of the Decepticons. With the rising threat of M.E.C.H. as well as the mysterious Black Water Project, Soundwave stands firm, ready to take on anything as long as he can do it from his leader's shadow.------------------------------------------------------------------------------IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY?
Weaponry: Soundwave is very skilled at hand-to-hand combat. He is also familiar with various types of weaponry. He rarely uses his built-in weaponry, and when he deploys it, his foes are usually very surprised to find that he packs a bit of punch: Soundwave carries an EMP Shotgun. In addition to doing physical damage, he is able to deploy a focused EMP cone from the weapon; this has a recharge time, of course, so he uses it sparingly, but often in conjunction with the weapon’s slug-flinging mode, as well as his own fighting prowess.
He is very physically strong and extremely skilled in combat, so he rarely ever has to resort to raw power. He is also able to deploy Laserbeak, who can deal a fair bit of damage on her own, but also acts as a distraction. An extremely unlucky combatant might find themselves on the receiving end of Soundwave's tentacles. He is able, if a foe is subdued, to attempt a hack a foe. This experience is extremely unpleasant, but difficult. Soundwave will not usually attempt a hack if he is outnumbered or insufficiently covered.
However, if Soundwave is pissed (and the quickest way to piss off the usually-calm Decepticon is to mess with his symbionts) he might hack someone just for spite. A hacked Cybertronian is under his control until Soundwave is forced off of them. Depending on the depth of the hack (deep hacks require more time to secure), removing Soundwave might actually prove to be detrimental to both his and his victim's health. Tearing apart two deep-hacked Cybertronians can destroy both of their minds.
Battles with Soundwave a few and far between, but when they do happen, they are often quick and brutal.
Extra:
-Soundwave's ability to spawn multiple symbionts is exceedingly rare, as most Cybertronians only ever have one. Nobody knows how many Soundwave has created, in total, and how many of that number are still alive, but one thing's for certain: he has a very unusual Spark.
-Soundwave genuinely enjoys music of virtually every variety, and so do his symbionts. They are more vocal about their enjoyment than their enigmatic host, however.
-It is believed that Soundwave used to have a proper face. Legend among the Decepticon ranks is that it was literally torn to shreds during a particularly fierce battle in the Kaon Gladiator pits. The legend goes on to say that, blind and in agony, Soundwave finished the fight, conquering his foe despite overwhelming odds. He replaced his face with a nigh-indestructible screen as a way of making himself stronger.
-He must take energon through a port on his neck. Soundwave never refuels in public, preferring to take his rations in his quarters.
-When alone or feeling comfortable, Soundwave often uses his tentacles as extra limbs. Anyone who seems him poking around his quarters will see him using them just as casually as he would use his hands; in addition, he prefers to sleep with them extended.
-Soundwave enjoys a bit of high grade when things are running smoothly for the Decepticons. He imbibes this either in private or in the presence and Megatron and/or Starscream only.------------------------------------------------------------------------------WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT MEHe could feel them.
It was maddening.
Most Cybertronians possessing symbiotes had a mental link to them. Soundwave was no exception. In an ideal situation, he would be existing in synchronicity with his handful of symbiotes, their levels of thought meshing together into one harmonious whole. Distance dulled the link, however, and he had been separated from Ravage, Rumble, and Frenzy for a long, long time.
But--and he might have been imagining it, he might have finally started to lose his grip on his steely mental control after countless ages of war--every now and then, at seemingly wholly random times, Soundwave would feel them, the slight trickle of their presence invading his thoughts for a moment, filling him with instinctive distress. If he wasn't imagining all of this, then that meant that they were, at the very least, alive and possibly on Earth.
But then again, if he wasn't imagining it, then what had happened to them that prevented them from coming to him?
It had happened again that day. Soundwave had been in his private quarters, refueling, when he thought he felt Frenzy's mental brush, and he had sat bolt upright, his energon forgotten. Sometimes he ignored the call, dismissing it as his imagination. Not today. The silent mech carefully unhooked himself from his cube and immediately slunk out of his room, making his way silently and stealthily through the corridors of the Nemesis until he was standing outside. The winds tugged teasingly, insistently, at the sharp angles of his frame.
Frenzy: Relay coordinates.
Nothing.
Soundwave felt his spark twist in frustration. He stayed there, alone on the prow of the Nemesis, for a long, long time.
